Micromorph Thin-Film Technology – Solar Technology with a future

When Inventux started its production in December 2008, it was the first solar company in Europe to manufacture micromorph thin-film modules in industrial mass production. As technology leader in this area, Inventux constantly develops this technology further to outperform its peak performances.

Inventux solar modules contain absorbers made of amorphous and microcrystalline silicon. Amorphous and microcrystalline silicon are suitable to be combined in a tandem solar cell, since the different band gaps facilitate an enhanced utilization of solar radiation and manufacturing can be done using the same technology. The combination of an amorphous with a microcrystalline cell is termed called a micromorph cell. Micromorph cells thus represent the most consistent advancement of amorphous silicon based tandem cell technology. Due to the very high spectral acceptance, they have the highest efficiency potential in the area of of silicon-based thin-film photovoltaics.

By comparison: If the tandem cell had the size of a Harry Potter book, the width of the absorbing silicon layers would be one third of a single book page!

The Inventux Module contains different layers which are deposited one after another onto a glass pane. Beyond its function as a substrate, the glass also acts as a component of the final encapsulation as a building panel. For the production of the absorber layers, the Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) using gaseous silicon hydrogen compounds became generally accepted. The production of the front and back contact layers (Transparent Conductive Oxide – TCO) is done by applying Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition (LPCVD).
